As the Oklahoma Baptist Discipleship Team, we strive to encourage, equip, and engage discipleship leaders in ministry across the state of Oklahoma. Let us work with you and your church on finding ways to partner together in developing strategies or training leaders to fulfill the Great Commission and make disciples!
Here are some ways that we can serve you:
We love to walk alongside leaders and hear more about their church, context, and challenges in ministry. Working together with you, we can discover some fresh and creative ways to approach your discipleship ministry.
Have us come to your church and lead a training with your staff or group leaders in what it means to lead Sunday School, small groups, or other discipleship efforts. We also lead breakout sessions for associational events and other training conferences.
We work throughout the year to produce training resources like our Sunday School videos or discipleship guides located on our Resources Page.
Small Groups & Sunday School
God moves in big ways through small groups. Christ gave us, as followers of him, the Great Commission. So, as we are “going,” we will make disciples of all nations by sharing the gospel and teaching them to live like Jesus. This is the foundation of a Discipleship Ministry. Discipleship Ministry is the front door of the church where people come in and connect with a church family. Sunday School or small groups serve as the primary avenues to accomplish this task. Meet the Discipleship Team
Dr. Doug Matlock
Discipleship and Small Groups Ministry Partner
Doug loves Jesus, his family, and serving others. Some of his earliest memories are singing hymns with his grandparents at First Baptist Church in Checotah. He gave his life to Christ when he was eight years old at a Vacation Bible School in Ada, which led him and his family to start attending church. Doug serves as the Discipleship and Small Groups Ministry Partner for Oklahoma Baptists, serving Baptist churches across the state and helping strengthen discipleship ministries. Prior to working for Oklahoma Baptists, Doug served in the local church in Oklahoma for over eighteen years. He also loves music, coffee, food, traveling with his family, hiking, sports, and great stories. His greatest passion is serving others to help them grow in their relationships with Christ.
Young Adult Discipleship Partner
Bertholomew “Prophet” Bailey, Sr. is from North Tulsa. He grew up in a large Christian family with a father who served as a Baptist pastor for thirty-eight years and a mother who served as church secretary. He came to Christ when he was nine years old and answered the call to ministry his senior year of high school. He would go on to obtain a track scholarship at Oklahoma Baptist University while pursuing a degree in ministry. Following O.B.U., Prophet completed his masters from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Over the last thirteen years, he has had the opportunity to be involved in the spiritual development of children, youth, and young adults. God has placed on his heart the desire to reach generations for His glory (Psalm 71:18). Currently, Prophet’s role as the Young Adult Discipleship Partner is to help churches across the state with strategies reaching and growing young adults. He married Nikol Bailey, his high school sweetheart, in 2009. They have three beautiful children Karrie Marie, Bertholomew Jr. (PJ), and Kelley Dru. Prophet enjoys jogging, reading, movies, stargazing and going to the park with his family.
